Shadow Fish

I got home from work today and needed to relax, so I sat in my favorite reading chair and treated myself to the great literary classic "One fish two fish red fish blue fish" by Dr.Seuss. Inspired by the aquatic theme of the first 6 pages in the book, I decided to paint another fish study. He doesn't quite have the same personality as a Seuss fish, but it's something to strive for!

Went to Sea World a couple of weeks ago... when I was there I took a lot of pictures. I finally got around to looking at them and decided to make a little study of one. This fish study inspired me to concept a merman, so in between working on a model for the day job I painted this character.

Creature Sketch in Zbrush

A warrior of an alien people...still in their Stone Age.

For anyone interested in the process, I started with a sphere and focused on getting the pose right first.  Usually I will block out the proportions first in a neutral pose, taking advantage of "symmetry", then I'll pose it later. This time I thought it would be fun to try something different. The details are limited to a few places and overall I kept it pretty rough for the sake of getting it done quickly. It was a fun experiment.
